Have Questions?

How often should I review my electrics?

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and the electrical regulator, Safe Electric, have suggested time periods between inspection and testing for various workplaces and residential accommodation. These are typically every year for a visual check and 3 to 5 years for an inspection and test. The testing aspect of the Periodic Inspection Report (PIR) is carried out in line with the National Rules for Electrical Installations and generates a PIR.

What should you do if the power goes out?

If the lights have gone out in all the houses on your street, the utility companies generally knows about the outage and will promptly take care of it. If your house is the only one without power, please call our 24-hour emergency electrical repair service immediately.

Use a Registered Electrical Contractor

You should ALWAYS use a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) to carry out electrical work in your home and ask for a Completion Certificate after the work is complete.

Otherwise you are putting yourself at risk and they are breaking the law.

Always get a Completion Cert from your Electrical Contractor

The Electricity Regulation Act 1999, as amended, makes it mandatory for a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) to issue a Completion Certificate for all electrical works (excluding minor works). If a REC carries out minor electrical works they must be certified if requested by the customer.

It is through this certification system that Safe Electric, can monitor and validate that the electrical works completed meet the required safety standards (National Rules for Electrical Installations).

What is Safe Electric?

Safe Electric’s primary objective is to protect the safety interests of customers with respect to electrical installation activities.

Safe Electric members must adhere to the Safe Electric Rules of Registration with regard to matters such as training, competence, inspection & audit, test equipment, insurance and completion certificates. It is through this registration system that Safe Electric, can monitor and validate that the electrical works completed meet the required safety standards.

Note: under the Electricity Regulation Act 1999, as amended, it is illegal for a Non-Registered Contractor to carry out Restricted Electrical Works. The act of falsely portraying oneself as a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) is a separate offence under of the same Act.
